Gully erosion is a major source of sediment runoff to the Great Barrier Reef and on-site it reduces productivity and degrades ecological value of the land and waterways. At this property, a significant erosion feature had developed in a paddock used for backgrounding and finishing cattle. The site experienced loss of topsoil, reduced pasture growth, and sediment export into downstream waterways.
NQ Dry Tropics engaged Verterra to assess the site and design a practical, cost effective and ecologically effective solution. The team worked together to implement a nature-based solution that would rehabilitate the gully, stabilise soils, and restore productive use of the paddock.
Utilising its expertise in gully remediation and land rehabilitation, Verterra developed a whole-of-property approach tailored to the site’s physical characteristics, land use and management objectives. The solution included:
This integrated approach restored ecological function to the landscape while supporting long-term grazing operations.
